Get In Front of an Employer – Via Postcard?

It is so common to send resumes via email, fax, and snail mail. Everyone does it – but not everyone gets their materials in front of a hiring manager. Think outside of the box for a second – try sending a postcard with an elevator speech and the address to your LinkedIn profile. A postcard gets noticed because it is rare to get them. If sent directly to the hiring manager (and not HR) the chances of it getting read increase dramatically. It is so easy to read and it takes seconds. You will be seen as creative and resourceful – as an innovative thinker. If your elevator speech is intriguing they will check you out, current job opening or not. You may even make a new networking connection. Before you send it, ensure that your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date, professional, and accomplishment based. Then write a short, but powerful speech. Make the employer want to open his browser and look you up. Whatever you do, make sure you pick a card that is professional or relevant to your industry. You want them to take you seriously and unless you are a zookeeper, a picture of a baby koala bear isn’t the way to do it.
